Visit Fri. 10A, Brandon THOMAS, Marjorie R. Sat. 10A, Brandon Striking symphony management's The musicians are seeking pay raises and increase in performances over a three-year period. By KURT LOFT Tribune Staff Writer Members of the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony management and striking musicians met Wednesday for eight hours of contract negotiations, but did not reach an agreement.

The symphony management did. make a new proposal which it would not divulge to the media and musicians were still deciding whether to accept the offer at negotiations late Wednesday night. Holly Duncan, symphony director of development, said the management has made its best offer, and can only wait for a decision from the other side. "I can comfortably say we've done everything we can to facilitate them," Duncan said. A musicians' spokesman said a decision to end continue the' strike "had to be made sometime tonight (Wednesday)" because Ron considers contract proposal I'm talking about concepts like ecoan nomics, staffing and size of ensem" ble." Brian Moorhead, the orchestra's principal clarinet player, said the Rollins, the musicians' lawyer, was scheduled to leave Tampa today.

He added talks would continue "throughout the night if we have to." It was the first time the two sides have met officially since Nov. 15 when the musicians voted to strike over salaries and the number of performances. Representatives and lawyers from both parties began talks at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the office of Peter Zinober, chief labor negotiator for the symphony management. Dick Deam, a federal mediator called in to coordinate negotiations, sat at the bargaining table between four management members and seven musicians.

By 5 the musicians requested a break before resuming talks. "This hasn't been easy," said Zinober, noticably fatigued after the all-day session. "We're all working very hard. The issues are complex, they're multiple and interrelated negotiations were a good sign. "We're talking," Moorhead said.

"Things are cooking, and management has made a new offer. I'm optimistic." On Nov. 15, musicians voted 72-7 to strike after rejecting the management's proposal for a new contract. The musicians are seeking increases in salary and number of performances both rehearsals and concerts over a three-year period. The salary for the majority of musicians 65 players is now between $4,700 and $5,100.

(The remaining 20 players are paid more according to status and seniority.) The musicians' original offer to the symphony proposed a salary increase to $6,000 the first year of the contract, $7,500 the second and $9,500 the third, and a performance increase of 135 to 175 over the threeyear period. Nine concerts, three programs at three different locations, have been canceled during the strike.
