He trained and served as a paratrooper and glider man during the final phase of the war and served under Gen. James M. Gavin in the 82nd Airborne Division. He was awarded the Belgian Fleur-au-Guerre for his part in the Battle of Bastogne, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, two presidential citations and the European Theater Ribbon. Miller returned to the United States-after the war, received his pilot's training and was assigned his second European tour of duty.

Besides his father, he is survived by his wife, Mrs. Agnes Herrington Miller, and two daughters, Margaret Louise and Sandra.
