The Pinellas Demo- crate Shut Out of i the Convention. settlement, aad aa they were Spaniards mostly, or of Spaalsh descent, tbe settle-mentwaa given the name of Spanish town the name ad the tew crumbling timbers of the old but are all that remain to provoke Inquiry from strangers aad tbe rialng generation. No, not quite all, for over among tbe trees is the deserted and almoat forgotten graveyard of these simple folk who, bo doubt, bad a history, but who shall declare It? The last denizens ot the point to depart were three old men well remembered by the school children ot ten or fifteen years ago. The three were Bonifacio Ceraago, Phillipl Bermuda and John Carrtlena who lived, each to himself in his simple dwelling, within call of each other but often without holding communication for days.

Carrtiena had twenty or thirty cale, black, white and Uwny of all colore and sizes, that were bla special delight. Ue waa on th. moat Intimate terms of friendship with bis Tabblea who seemed delighted In bis presence; but at the first sight or aouud ot a stranger, whist! there's not a cat In sight. Tbe curious school children would bide about tbe woods for hours peering cautloualy about to see the old man eurronnded by bis cats. Carrtiena fed bia cats with fish that he caught, and when fish were scarce the old mac never old any from his catch until his four-footed friends bad had their share.

They would come trooping to meet blm aa his boat cane In the creek and purred about hia feet and gamboled before him until they received their longed for tidbits. Hia call waa, "Poos, pooe, poos," and every cat knew it well. Phillipl Bermuda waa from Mexico, but moved to Cuba with his parents when a child, and waa educated by them la Spain. Ho waa more cultured than the other men and waa a special friend of our townsman, D. Gbira, who was well acquainted with all the men He attempted to homestead the point, but tbe lawyer to whom he intrusted his affairs failed to enter It and it was afterward bomeateaded by Geo.

Washington; the portion on which the Spaniards lived Is now owned by George H. Pack wood of Maltland, Fla. Bayslde, Hyde Park and Spanish town settlement all overlook HUIfborough bay and from almost any polrt the view Is beautiful. The broad, bins bay over which these lonely men paddled their canoes, each one to himself, and upon which they almost lived, stretches far away until girt by the distant woody shores whose immense forests of pine take en that lovely hazy bluish green which tbe distance alwaya lends to their proud crests. Lonely In their lives and alone at death, theae three men passed away one at a time and none mourned the.r losa.

They had no kith or kin that knew where they were, or knowing cared to claim them. Tcetr absence from their accustomed haunts provoked inquiry and kind neighbors entering found the silent messenger, Death, had called them home. Forgotten, their bones lie crumbling In the deserted graveyard where one by one they were laid to rest. Scene on the Floor and Officers Called in to Quell the Obstreperous. Tain pa Furniture Co.

All these have pleasant homes overlooking the bay. The banks of the creek are steep and covered with a thick undergrowth of brush and saw-pnlmetto while giant oaks and pines intertwined wit grape and other vines cast a deep shadow over the creek; lower down near the water, rooas and fern grow In rank profusion. The mouth ot this pretty creek waa the of the simple fishermen who lived there unmolested so many years. DEKFEMXO THE CHANNEL. AThlrtee Foot Channel Practicable the HUUboroaga River. Capt. J. W.

Fackett, of St. Auguatine, chief aaslaUnt of Capt. W. M. Black, chief of tbe government corpa of civil en gineer stationed at St.

Angustlne, arrived In tbe city yesterday morning. He will remain until the dredging In Old Tampa Bay Is begun. Engineer E. F. Smith, of M.

Aoguetlne, le with him and will be tbe Inspector left In charge of the work. Capt. Georse Warner has been appointed to alat Mr. Smith. Tbe place and amount of tbe dredging te be done given to tbo Jors5AL lat week.

Tbe appropriation made by Con-Irene this year will be applied to etraigbteclog aod deepening the channel in UUlshorough Bar, to a probable depth of nine feet. Thirteen feet of water at low tide i obtainable in ible bay up to the Hillsborough mer by atralbtenlns; the channel and dredging three miles out. Beyond that point a system of jetties would be necessary to maintain a channel of good depth. Tbe com of an accurate survey and sounding? of tbe bay would be about 1 5,000. If auch a aurrey were made It would be the basis for aa accurate estimate of the cost of deepening oar channel to thirteen er fourteen feet.

Tbe amount of jck In tbe bay caa aot be estimated without numerous borings, but there la only a mall Quantity of rock to be removed, thirteen tet of water caa probably be obtained at aa expense of 2A0.000. Tbe channel Is so crooked at present aad ao narrow tbat vessels can not eater without great difficulty. Tbe craoka la the channel are also so sudden that only amaller vaoeels caa make them. The government approprlatioa of the present year will be applied to remedy these defects aa far aa possible, but It la entirely inadequate lor the work neceeaery to be done. Tbe Jocbxal representative acknowl edge, courtesies from Engineers Sackett and Smith.
